Judy Woodborne - Water, Fire & Air06/05/2012 - 00:00 "I have taken the elements of earth, fire, air and water as the inspiration for this series of paintings working with images from my travels to China, and Zanzibar as references. These four elements represent the Western concept of matter. In the East, the elements are considered to be earth, wood, water, metal and fire. I have represented the elements of water and air in the circular paintings, reminiscent of the eastern elements. " (Judy Woodbourne) Opening on Sunday 6th May 2012 at 4.30 p.m. at The Cape Gallery, 60 Church Street, Cape Town The artist will be conducting a walkabout on Saturday 12th May 2012 at 11.00 a.m. Duration: 6th May 2012 - 26th May 2012 ... Scouting the Cape16/03/2012 - 07:10 What makes Cape Town one of the top commercial movie destinations in the world? Bernard Franz asks location scout Gregg Stopforth. Why is Cape Town so popular? Apart from the predictable weather, and the complimentary season to the Northern Hemisphere, you can get distinct looks in small confined places. The city offers a helluvalot of diversity. You get old Europe around Greenmarket Square or Queen Victoria Street, the generic American downtown in Thibault Square, or the American-type suburbia in Voortrekker Road or the Northern Subu... Swing it in Cape Town16/03/2012 - 07:06 Bernard Franz chats with DJ Fred Spider about the swing scene in Cape Town, and how nightlife here compares with the rest of the world. There is a revival of swing these days. What’s fuelling it? I wouldn’t really call it a revival but rather a refresh. The old swing music from the 20s and 30s is fascinating, but the quality of sound was crap because of the recordings. Nowadays musicians and DJs are sampling old tracks, adding some beats and creating an electronic contemporary swing called electro swing, which keeps all that’s good abo... Read more |

021’s intrepid adrenalin junkie, Jacob Goldberg, 17, finds that paragliding is a gentle way to jump off a mountain.15/03/2012 - 12:11 I picked a particularly hot day to leap off Lion’s Head. The sun challenges me from above, flicks the back of my nose and whips my neck. As my pilot, Jan, straps me into my harness, I find myself looking at where I soon will have to “run and run fast” off. It's just a drop – a place of land, then no land. I will effectively be jogging off a mountain. However, whilst I stand, perspiring, the idea of getting down seems appealing. To be candid, the heat does strange things to the way I think.... Read more |

The Mar Tzu temple in Paarden Island16/03/2012 - 07:00 Did you know there’s a Chinese temple in the middle of Paarden Island? Privately funded by members of the Taiwanese community, Mar Tzu temple is predominantly for Taiwanese fishermen. As 200 boats pass Cape Town harbour per year (making it one of the most important ports of call for Taiwanese fishing fleets worldwide), it is at Mar Tzu that many crew members come to pray, express gratitude, and ask for counsel. The Cape Town temple is one of only a handful of very important Taiwanese temples outside of Taiwan. ... Read more |
Dining
Reuben's at the One and Only25/04/2012 - 12:31 How did pumpkin soup find its way onto a menu in the restaurant of Cape Town’s six-star hotel? It’s a kind of cheeky imposition. My dining companion, 021s editor Bernard Franz, hates soup from the squash family, and so I was surprised when he ordered the pumpkin soup with vanilla buchu and honey foam (R60). “Just curious,” he said. This Cinderella soup was all dressed up and ready to meet her prince charming. It arrived and sat Aphrodite-like, wafting an enticing, almost unnerving, sensual vanilla and honey aroma that almost interfered ... Read more |
