The 19-time English Premier League Champions, Manchester United, will play Ajax Cape Town in the MTN Football Invitational. This match will support the Mandela Day celebrations, and will form part of their 2012/13 pre-season tour.
At the official press announcement in Johannesburg, former Manchester United Player, Quinton Fortune, encouraged young soccer fans to come out and watch how football is played at the highest level when the Barclay's Premier league runners-up flaunt their skills at the "world class" Cape Town Stadium.
"The City is proud to be associated with a leading brand such as Manchester United and this association helps position Cape Town as a premier events destination. Matches such as this act as a great unifier of people and hence will have a very positive impact on the city," said Councillor Grant Pascoe, Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing.
Both Councillor Pascoe and George Comitis, the CEO of Ajax Cape Town, are sure that the match is a guaranteed sell-out as thousands of Ajax and Manchester United fans will clamour to support their respective teams.
The match will also pay homage to the legacy of Nelson Mandela. Fans at the match will sing happy birthday to Madiba in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the number of people singing collectively in one place. As well as this, South Africans are this year encouraged to dedicate a minimum of 94 minutes to serving their communities in order to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 94th birthday.
Some of Manchester United's top stars and coaching staff will spend the first of their two days in the Mother City hosting a coaching clinic for youngsters, and this will be followed by an open training session.
